Webber's top of the grid for Whittlebury Hall charity dinner

12/11/02

Formula One driver Mark Webber - who has been unveiled as one of Jaguar's two new drivers for next season - has confirmed his appearance at the F1 Charity Gala at Whittlebury Hall, in Silverstone, next month.

Webber will be among the guests of honour at the gala dinner on December 6, when the organisers hope to raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities.

"It's fabulous news that Mark can be with us on such a special night," said Julie Holdom, of BNI members Hyperformance Events Ltd. "It's a great chance for Formula One fans to meet a current driver and he's agreed to do a question and answer session with another of our guests, Jon Desborough, the presenter of Channel Four's World Rally Championship coverage."

Webber, who is from Australia, is now very much a local man after signing a two year deal this week with Jaguar Racing, based at Milton Keynes.

Webber's ambition is to become the first Australian driver since Alan Jones in 1980 to win the F1 world championship, and believes that joining Jaguar will help him move a step closer to achieving that goal.

"Obviously there's a long way to go before I can do anything close to what Alan achieved, and of course Jack Brabham before him, another great Australian F1 driver of the past," said Webber. "I got an e-mail from Jack to congratulate me on being signed up for Jaguar, but I've got to put a lot more stripes on my sleeve before I can stand next to those guys."

Webber, who was born in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, joined Jaguar from Minardi, and will link up with the young Brazilian driver Antonio Pizzonia.

"I'm truly excited about racing for Jaguar next season," he added. "It is one of the most emotive and successful names in motor racing and one that has a wealth of motorsport heritage.

"It is a phenomenally competitive time in Formula One right now and given the intense development programme Jaguar has in place, it is critical that Antonio and I help accelerate the team's progress over winter so as to be ready for what promises to be a very exciting season given the revised format of the race weekend."
