Marathon Man Michael does it all for Charity

09/04/02

BNI member Michael Markham will complete a remarkable recovery from serious injury when he runs in the London Marathon this weekend. Indeed, so pleased is he to be pounding the streets again he has been raising money for local charities in Northamptonshire - as he will be when he takes part in the world's most famous marathon event.

Michael, the managing director of Stanair Industrial Services Limited, resumed running less than 12 months ago...eight years after suffering serious injuries in a motorway pile up. And taking part in this weekend's London Marathon is the fulfillement of a personal ambition he thought he would never achieve.

"I have always loved running, I ran competitively as a youngster and in the 1980s I took part in many marathons to help raise money for the Jimmy Saville Stoke Mandeville appeal," said Michael, 54. "But I suffered serious injuries in an accident back in 1993 and I never thought I'd be able to run again.

"However, with the help of many people and the invaluable support of my family, I was given the go ahead to ease myself back into it again."

Since he started running again, Michael has raised money for a number of causes close to his heart include the Kettering based Cranley Hospice Appeal. This weekend he intends to raise a healthy four figure sum for The Workbridge Centre in Northampton.

And as far as Michael is concerned raising money while doing something he loves is the perfect partnership.

"I have always loved running, and because I haven't been able to run for such a long time I really do have a special affection for it now," he says. "It keeps me fit, and by raising money I am helping other people who have perhaps been somewhat less fortunate in life than many of us."
